DIY Miniature coffee table 1:12 scale (instructions)
This DIY miniature coffee table is made from foam core board and skinny craft sticks. You don’t need any special tools to make it. I used a craft knife, a strong pair of scissors, and a grid ruler. With a little math, it can be scaled up or down. I designed it to fit into a 1:12 scale dollhouse.
Materials and tools needed to make the coffee table
foam core board
Create brand Skinny Sticks (craft sticks). I found these at Walmart.
black, or any color, acrylic paint
acrylic gloss medium or varnish
NOTE: if you want to paint your table I recommend painting the cut foam core board pieces before assembly.
Instructions for the tabletop
- 2 pieces of 3 5/8″ x 1/4″ foam core board slats
- 2 pieces of 1 5/8″ x 1/4″ foam core board slats
Assemble together into a rectangle with glue. 1 5/8″ slats go inside the longer slats.
The final measurement should be 3 5/8″ x 1 3/4″
Be sure to square your corners and allow them to dry completely.
Cut 7 Skinny Sticks into 3 1/2″ lengths.
Glue the sticks on top of the tabletop frame that you just made.
Allow to dry completely.
Note: if the ends of the sticks are not uniform in length, take a strong sharp scissor and carefully cut the ends. I did this without a problem.
Instructions for table legs and lower shelf
- 2 pieces of 1 1/4″ x 1″ foam core board (legs)
- 1 piece of 1 7/8″ x 1″ foam core board (shelf)
Take your tabletop and place it upside down on a flat surface.
Glue each leg inside the top about 3/4″ from the end of the tabletop on each side.
Carefully position the shelf in between the legs with glue and hold in place for a minute until the glue sets.
If you already painted your foam core pieces you’re done!
I plan to stain the top of the table.
To give the foam core additional strength I painted it with an acrylic gloss medium when I was finished with the table.
