3 Button Knit Cowl scarf

This cowl is loosely knit and fits nicely under a coat or jacket.
It’s a nice piece for a beginning knitter because it helps you work on the flow of switching the knit and purl stitches in one row.

Materials: US 13 knitting needles (9mm)
Lion Brand Nature’s Choice (cotton) medium weight yarn – 1 skein
A light weight cotton yarn – 1 skein
3 one inch buttons
needle and thread

Terms: k=knit
p= purl
sts= stitches


Start: Working with 2 strands together cast on 46 sts.

row 1: k6, p2, k6, p6, k6, p4, k6, p4, k6
row 2: p6, k4, p6, k4, p6, k6, p6, k2, p6
row 3: repeat row 1
row 4: repeat row 2
row 5: repeat row 1
row 6: repeat row 2
row 7: (buttonhole row) k3, bind off 2 sts, k1, p2, k6, p5, k6, p4, k6, p4, k6
row 8: p6, k4, p6, k4, p6, k6, p6, k1, replace bound off sts by adding 2 sts, p3
row 9, 10 and 11: repeat rows 1 through 3
rows 12 and 13: repeat rows 7 and 8
rows 14 thru 17: repeat rows 1 through 4
rows 18 thru 21: repeat rows 7 through 10

Bind off all stitches using knitwise and purlwise respectively.

Reinforce buttonholes if necessary with slip stitches
